Caada College is part of the San Mateo County Community College District and is designated as both a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI), enrolling approximately 10,000 students each academic year. The Position:
The Project Director - MESA Program is responsible for day-to-day management of the MESA Community College Program (MCCP). With programmatic guidance from the Chancellor's Office State Project Monitor, the Project Director maintains communications between the MESA program and engineering, mathematics and science faculty, unit heads of student support services, engineering, mathematics and science department deans, MESA students, student organizations, related professional societies and campus administrators; coordinates planning of all student services, which includes admissions, financial aid, scholarships, summer programs and jobs and academic, career and student advising. The Project Director is also responsible for ensuring student eligibility and that student contractual agreements are met; maintains program records, coordinates evaluation of program activities and accomplishments, participates in MESA training, evaluation, and other activities and works with the faculty sponsor to ensure successful implementation of the program. The Project Director is responsible for designing and implementing project services, directing the work of other staff, and maintaining effective partnerships and working relationships with funding agencies, governmental jurisdictions, other educational institutions, community organizations and business representatives. Public contact is extensive and involves outside agency and organization representatives, staff, students, and the general public for the purpose of exchanging policy, technical and procedural information. A high degree of independent judgment and creativity are required to resolve a variety of minor and major problems that arise. Consequences of errors in judgment can be costly in employee and staff time, public relations, and money. A Project Director can direct the work of professional, paraprofessional, clerical, student, and volunteer staff as assigned.



Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.   1. Exchange information with staff, students, business representatives, other educational institutions, funding and governmental agencies, community organizations and the general public regarding college project policy, partnerships, grants and other funding resources, project goals and outcomes, program review, and strategic planning
  2. Drive a motor vehicle to attend off-site meetings, workshops, and participate in other activities to present and obtain current information; make presentations to small and large groups as needed
  3. Research, compile data, format, compose, and prepare statistical, financial, demographic, and other special and regular reports, grant applications, narratives, presentations, surveys, needs assessments and other materials; interview clients and project partners to conduct needs assessments and determine appropriate project services
  4. Use a variety of computer software to design and prepare correspondence, reports, budget studies, track and review financial and other data, publicity materials and other written materials; set up and maintain electronic and manual file systems
  5. Confer with management and other staff to develop and implement needs assessments and other studies and surveys for targeted populations served by the project
  6. Compile statistics for use in designing/developing new and modified project services, goals, and future service delivery changes
  7. Participate in strategic planning with management and other staff; make recommendations for project modifications
  8. Plan project budgets in conjunction with management and other staff; monitor budget expenditures and revenues, transfers, and reporting online
  9. Make recommendations for changes to budgets, staffing, facilities, supplies, and equipment
  10. Train and direct the work of staff, student assistants, and volunteers
  11. Meet regularly with the administrator responsible for planning the implementation of the MESA program at Caada College
  12. Meet regularly with the faculty sponsor to report on progress of the program and to consult on plans for further implementation and improvements
  13. Consult with faculty, instructional assistants, and administrators of support services to assist in improved delivery of services to students
  14. Maintain contact with MESA students through personal discussions, regular meetings, and other activities such as mentoring and coaching
  15. Maintain regular contact with Instructional Office, deans, and faculty members to promote an understanding of MESA services and to build a program of academic rigor
  16. Collect and compile data and prepare status reports as required by the California Community Colleges Chancellors Office (CCCCO) and participate in campus activities that lead to the collection and submission of MESA student data for the CCCCO Management Information System
  17. Prepare mid-year and annual programmatic and financial reports of MESA generated funds
  18. Maintain a file on each MESA student and transfer student with information on students enrollment, academic performance, success, participation, and current status; review all student applications for admission to MESA and make recommendations as appropriate
  19. Provide ongoing evaluation of the campus MESA program and recommend steps to improve it
  20. Process budget items, monitor expenses, and work with the dean and faculty sponsor in planning program
  21. Work with department faculty to select mathematics, science, computer science, and engineering instructional assistants and/or tutors for MESA students
  22. Develop plans for implementation of program in cooperation with the faculty sponsor, CCCCO project monitor, deans and others
  23. Develop tutoring and study program for MESA, which includes the recruitment and training of tutors and incorporates a mix of individual, small, and large group study activities
  24. Recruit and schedule speakers for MESA student meetings
  25. Plan, schedule, and coordinate career advising, resume workshops, and job orientations for students
  26. Plan, schedule, and coordinate activities related to academic advising, including advocacy and selection of designated MESA counselor
  27. Develop, plan, and coordinate activities related to student retention
  28. Maintain contacts and encourage the formation of a pipeline and pathway for students between MESA and four year colleges and universities
  29. Work with local campus staff and/or regional MESA colleagues in order to research and prepare grant proposals for collaborative submissions
  30. Perform other related duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited institution, preferably in a mathematics based field of study or STEM discipline
  • Successful work experience of increasing responsibility that has included program planning, assessment, implementation, and evaluation, budget planning and reporting, research and data analysis
  • One year experience or more in delivering student services aimed at improving studying, test-taking, and other academic related skills, preferably with students majoring in mathematics based fields
  • A minimum of three years successful work experience in education, industry, or other profession involving work with post-secondary students in mathematics based fields
  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication, including public speaking
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
  • Skill in the use of a variety of computer software to create spreadsheets, reports, correspondence, and other materials
  • Skill in training, leading, and directing the work of others
  • Experience with the organization and implementation of various complex office procedures and forms
  • Possession of a valid California Drivers license (or the ability to obtain one) and the ability to drive a motor vehicle to off-site locations





Physical Requirements:
This classification requires sitting for various lengths of time; the ability to type, use a phone, stand intermittently, walk, bend and stoop, occasionally lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects of light to moderate weight, work at a computer, including viewing a monitor for various lengths of time, repetitive use of keyboard, mouse or other control device, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate keyboard; and ability to operate a motor vehicle and drive to off campus locations in order to perform the essential functions.
