The University of Idahos OIT Network Team is looking for reliable, quick learners with strong customer service and problem-solving skills. You will be mentored and trained in the design, engineering and operations of enterprise network systems by a motivated and dedicated team of experienced network engineers. This is a unique opportunity for hands-on, in depth learning about enterprise network systems in a rural art town.
Position Overview:
Network Engineer I
This position provides mission critical, enterprise network and security services, including design, planning, procurement, provisioning, monitoring, troubleshooting, and consulting, for multiple campuses across the state. They will engage with equipment vendors and service providers to address design questions and escalate support problems.

Duties may include:
- Provide consultation and expert network support, resolve complex issues, implement changes and complex network configurations
- Maintain detailed work logs for tracking requests and resolving hardware, software and service problems
- Collaborate with vendors and service providers to resolve incidents
- Maintain and enhance support through continuous improvement activities and new technology implementation
- Identify and respond to network issues, outages and events
- Maintain network management and security tools
- Provide training and support to the U of I community, communicate accepted practices and work within resource boundaries to develop solutions
- Foster an atmosphere of collaborative problem solving, displaying a strong commitment to customer service
- Other duties as assigned
Network Engineer II
This position leads the selection, design and implementation of new network and security technologies and services. They provide mission critical, enterprise network and security services, including design, planning, procurement, provisioning, monitoring, troubleshooting, and consulting, for multiple campuses across the state.
Duties may include:
- Maintain and enhance network stability, security and efficiency through continuous improvement activities, implementation of new technologies, consultation and incident response
- Provide expert network consultation, recommend solutions and collaborate on network additions and reconfigurations
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and manage the network, including incident handling and escalation to vendors and service providers when necessary
- Design, customize and implement network upgrades and expansions while ensuring minimal disruption to network availability
- Monitor, troubleshoot and respond to security incidents and vulnerabilities
- Provide expert network support by addressing inquiries, resolving complex issues, and implementing changes
- Optimize client and program satisfaction through collaborative problem-solving, strong commitment to customer service and timely action to meet network and system needs
- Other duties as assigned
Required Experience:
Network Engineer I
- Experience in enterprise network operations
- Identifying and solving data network problems
- Installing, administering and configuring switches, routers and wireless access points
Network Engineer II
- One year of configuration experience with network operating systems
- Identifying and solving data network support problems
- Working with:
- Routing protocols, Access Control Lists (ACLs) and VLAN configurations
- Structured wiring systems and standards
- Interacting with users and delivering customer service
- Working in a team environment and promoting the goals of the organization
Required Education:
Network Engineer I
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Network Engineer II
- Bachelors Degree in a computer science related field; four additional years of configuration experience with network operating systems (for a total of five years) may substitute for a Bachelors Degree
Required Other:
Network Engineer I and II
- Must be able to respond to emergency calls outside business hours, including evenings and weekends
- Must be able to implement planned network maintenance outside business hours, including evenings and weekends
Additional Preferred:
Network Engineer I
- Bachelors Degree in computer science or a related field
- Experience interacting with users to identify requirements and resolve network problems
- Experience working cooperatively and communicating effectively with management and colleagues
- Demonstrated record of delivering quality customer service and communicating effectively both verbally and in writing
- Knowledge of structured wiring systems and standards
- Knowledge of network technologies such as TCP/IP, Ethernet and Wireless LAN protocols
- Experience working with network firewalls, and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
- Network engineering or design certification (CNNA, CCNP, etc.)
- Knowledge of industry trends and hardware and software
Network Engineer II
- Bachelors Degree in computer science or a related field
- Experience interacting with users to identify requirements and resolve network problems
- Experience working cooperatively and communicating effectively with management and colleagues
- Demonstrated record of delivering quality customer service and communicating effectively both verbally and in writing
- Knowledge of structured wiring systems and standards
- Knowledge of network technologies such as TCP/IP, Ethernet and Wireless LAN protocols

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Network Engineer I and II
- Must be able to:
- Lift, carry and/or otherwise move up to 50 pounds
- Ascend and descend ladders, bend, stoop and stand for extended periods
