Position Overview:
Reporting to the Executive Director of Environmental Health and Safety, this position assists in the leadership, development, and oversight in the administration of the Environmental Health and Safety Department and continuously works to improve practices, programs, policies, procedures and training needs to meet changing regulatory demands that govern safety and health requirements and compliance responsibilities of the University. The Assistant Director of Environmental Health and Safety will assist in the operational management of the Environmental Health & Safety functional groups, which consist of Occupational Health & Safety, Fire Safety, Environmental Resource Protection & Compliance, Lab Safety, Hazardous Waste, Radiation Safety, and Industrial Hygiene, as needed.

Required Experience:
  • Five years of experience in environmental health, safety programs and environmental compliance

Required Education:
  • Bachelors degree in environmental science, chemistry, biology, or another related scientific field

Required Other:
  • Live within 15 miles of the University of Idaho or willing to relocate to within 15 miles of Moscow within six months after initial hire for the purpose of emergency response
  • Respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials at any hour
  • Possess and maintain a valid drivers license and meet the University of Idaho requirements to drive university vehicles
  • Must participate in the University of Idaho medical surveillance program
  • Ability to travel to meet business needs
  • Ability to work nonstandard business hours which may include evenings, weekends and holidays

Additional Preferred:
  • Masters of Science degree, in a science related field
  • Experience working in a university setting
  • Advanced knowledge of EHS programs and administration
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, consensus standards and current technology concerning health and safety issues, and ability to interpret and apply them
  • Ability to operate personal computers and demonstrate proficiency using word processing programs and database software


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Ability to carry, lift and/or otherwise move heavy materials weighing 50 pounds
  • Must be able to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
