Posting Context Statement:
The Civil Engineering Laboratory Technician provides technical expertise in the operation, maintenance, and fabrication of specialized equipment for laboratory instruction and research activities for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The work includes metal fabrication, welding, woodworking, concrete mixing, pump maintenance, and basic electrical wiring. The position assists with procurement, storage, preparation, and disposal of laboratory materials. In addition to departmental responsibilities, this position plays a college-wide role in laboratory safety oversight by coordinating inspection of life-safety systems, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and supporting the College of Engineering Safety Committee.
Position Overview:
This position will fabricate, install and repair mechanical systems, research equipment and structural components. It will repair and maintain mechanical equipment and perform welding on structural components.

- Provide fabrication and maintenance support
- Use hand-welding, flame-cutting, hand-soldering and brazing equipment to join metal components, fill holes, indentations and seams of fabricated metal products
- Fabricate custom-made parts
- Fit, align and assemble fabricated parts; clean and finish projects to meet specifications
- Rebuild and manufacture replacement parts of complete mechanical assemblies
- Determine cause of failure or wear and select appropriate repair/replace method
- Communicate and coordinate with supervisors, coworkers, faculty and students to develop efficient, cost-effective plans
- Interpret plans, blueprints, schematics, manuals and verbal instructions to determine project scope
- Provide CEE laboratory support for teaching
- Maintain CEE laboratory space and equipment
- Provide CEE laboratory support for research
- Coordinate COE Laboratory Safety Program
- Other duties as assigned
Required Experience:
- Four years of work as a welder/fabricator
Required Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Required Other:
- Possess a valid drivers license and be able to meet university requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
- Be at least 18 years of age
Additional Preferred:
- Experience with metal work, woodworking, concrete mixing, pump maintenance, and electrical wiring.
- Ability to read electronic drawings and technical manuals to operate and repair laboratory equipment.
- Experience conducting and documenting safety inspections.
- Current CPR/First Aid Instructor certification.
- Strong communication skills for effectively interacting with faculty, students, and staff.
- Experience using basic computer skills (Word, Excel).
- Ability and experience in teaching and mentoring students in laboratory settings.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Must be able to:
- Bend, stoop and work in awkward positions for several hours at a time
- Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding and scissor lifts
- Carry, lift or otherwise move items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Work in confined spaces using equipment and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Work in inclement weather conditions
- Participate in a medical surveillance program and respirator fit test
