Posting Context Statement:
Reporting to the Executive Director of EHS, the Industrial Hygienist serves as the University subject matter expert related to industrial hygiene compliance regulations. As such, they are expected to acquire and maintain up-to-date knowledge about industrial hygiene laws and regulations pertaining to university operations and provide expert advice to leadership.
Position Overview:
This position manages and implements university-wide industrial hygiene compliance programs including industrial hygiene, asbestos and lead-based paint management, laboratory safety, chemical exposure investigations and indoor air quality assessments, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, and medical surveillance.
Duties may include:
- Managing the Industrial Hygiene Programs
- Providing remedies for exposures to hazardous materials
- Conducting indoor environmental air quality investigations
- Developing and providing training in industrial hygiene topics
- Performing laboratory safety audits
- Responding to hazardous materials emergencies
- Providing supervision for program staff
- Other duties as assigned
Required Experience:
- Three years experience in industrial hygiene duties and indoor air quality sampling and assessment
- Experience managing regulatory compliance as demonstrated by holding at least one of the below:
- EPA Asbestos Abatement Supervisor certification
- AHERA Building Inspector certification
- EPA Lead-Based Paint Inspector certification
- A Certified Industrial Hygienist
Required Education:
- Bachelors Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science or related field
Required Other:
- Must reside within 15 miles of the University of Idaho or willing to relocate to within 15 miles of Moscow within six months after initial hire for the purpose of emergency response
- Able to work weekends/nights for on-call and emergency service requests
- Possess and maintain a valid drivers license and meet the University of Idaho requirements to drive university vehicles
- Must participate in the University of Idaho medical surveillance program
- Ability to travel occasionally to meet business needs
Additional Preferred:
- Masters degree, preferably in industrial hygiene, life sciences, chemistry, or a related field
- Certifications:
- EPA Asbestos Abatement Supervisor certification
- AHERA Building Inspector certification
- EPA Lead-Based Paint Inspector certification, and/or
- A Certified Industrial Hygienist
- Experience working in a university setting
- Advanced knowledge of:
- Industrial hygiene principles
- The selection, proper use, and application of personal protective equipment
- Asbestos and lead-based paint regulations and procedures pertaining to ensuring the safety of abatement personnel and building occupants laboratory safety rules, regulations and established guidelines
- Knowledge of the principles and properties of chemistry
- Working knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, consensus standards and current technology concerning health and safety issues, and ability to interpret and apply them
- Ability to operate personal computers and demonstrate proficiency using word processing programs and database software
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Ability to carry, lift and/or otherwise move heavy materials weighing up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
