Position Summary:
This non-tenure track assistant professor will teach graduate-level courses in gerontology, consistent with the area of expertise, as well as provide support for integrating gerontology content in other SHAMP programs. In addition, they will utilize innovative, evidence-based teaching strategies to engage students in both in-person and online formats; provide academic mentorship, guidance, and support to students, including capstone advising; and assess student performance and provide constructive feedback to facilitate learning. The faculty will also engage with local and regional agencies related to gerontology to promote academic initiatives and identify student opportunities. They will also engage in scholarly or creative activities relevant to the field of Gerontology. The Masters of Gerontology is an online program.

Unit/Department Summary:
As a unit of the University of Idaho (UI), the Masters of Science, Gerontology is located in the Department of Nursing in the School of Health and Medical Professions (SHAMP). The mission of SHAMP is to improve the health of the people of Idaho by developing a robust academic health care delivery system that will educate and set forth a skilled workforce of healthcare professionals to attack this critical healthcare shortage. Programs within SHAMP are Doctorate of Anatomical Science, Athletic Training and Masters of Science in Gerontology. The Master of Science in Gerontology prepares graduates to assume major leadership roles in the field of aging, primarily in the planning, administration, and evaluation of programs in the private and public sectors, as well as executive positions in the delivery of direct services to older people and their families and in the instruction of older adults and service providers. The Masters of Gerontology is an online program.

Contingency Description:
(3) This faculty appointment is contingent on funding and/or work to support the position. Employee acknowledges and agrees that in the event of insufficient funding and/or work, as determined by University in its sole discretion, University may: (1) change this Agreement by adjusting the employees FTE and annual salary throughout the contract year; or (2) terminate this Agreement and employees employment prior to the end of the term of appointment, upon 60 days written notice. Employee further acknowledges and agrees that in the event termination for insufficient funding and/or work becomes necessary, the notice provisions of Faculty Staff Handbook 3900B will not apply.

Minimum Education/Degree Required:
Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire.
Required Qualifications:
  • Terminal Degree (PhD, EdD, DNP) in Gerontology, Aging Studies, or a closely related field. Candidates within one year of degree completion will be considered.
  • Experience with online teaching at the graduate level in gerontology or related subjects.
  • Experience communicating both verbally and in writing.
  • Experienced leader.
  • Experience researching gerontology or related areas.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Accreditation for Gerontology Education Council standards.
  • We are especially interested in individuals who have evidence of experience in teaching health professional students in the clinical sciences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering student success and academic excellence.
