The Position:
The College seeks a full-time, tenure track faculty member in Computer Science. The ideal candidate will share the College's commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.


Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the scope of work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this classification.

1. Support the Engineering/Computer Science Department, including overseeing the development and management of the following in Computer Science: certificates and degrees, curriculum, sequence of course offerings, and collaborations with other departments and local industry

2. Teach all levels of courses in Computer Science from introductory to advanced, including a combination of lecture and laboratory sections

3. Participate, on an ongoing basis, in the development, assessment, and analysis of student learning outcomes in Computer Science

4. Actively participate in curriculum revisions and new course development for Computer Science, guided by student learning outcomes and curriculum assessment processes

5. Collaborate with other instructors within and outside the department to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success

6. Support programs connected to the STEM Center and Fabrication Lab, including the Engineering and Technology Scholars (ETS) and STEM student clubs

7. Support and facilitate Code Jam, a one- to two-week intensive program designed to prepare students for their upcoming programming courses, support study skill development, and help build community

8. Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment, and technology that will enhance offerings of the departments

9. Manage a department budget, including long-range planning for classroom and lab equipment upgrades

10. Manage and update laboratory manuals and instructional resources

11. Collaborate with Innovation Center (Fabrication Lab) and STEM Center staff to connect Computer Science instruction with center activities

12. Maintain expertise in current teaching methodologies, technologies, and curricula and develop new instructional materials and techniques to meet the changing needs of students

13. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours

14. Serve as a member of division and college committees

15. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs in a timely manner

16. The college offers day and evening classes, and faculty may be required to teach a class in the evening


Minimum Qualifications:
Masters or above in computer science or computer engineering OR Bachelors in either of the above AND Masters or above in mathematics, cybernetics, business administration, accounting or engineering OR Bachelors in engineering AND Masters or above in cybernetics, engineering, mathematics, or business administration OR Bachelors in mathematics AND Masters or above in cybernetics, engineering, mathematics, or business administration OR Bachelors degree in any of the above AND a Masters degree or above in information science, computer information systems, or information systems OR the equivalent (see below)

(NOTE: Courses in the use of computer programs for application to a particular discipline may be classified for minimum qualifications purposes, under the discipline of the application)

Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom

Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.
Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Masters Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelors or Associates Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.
Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Subject matter preparation:
Preference will be given to candidates who:

1. Possess a professional level of competence in Computer Science with demonstrated familiarity with the sub-disciplines of Computer Science, and ability to teach the full range of community college courses in these disciplines, including object-oriented, database, mobile, web, microcontroller, and computer architecture programming courses

2. Front-end web development, back-end web development, and mobile development for iOS, Android and hybrid apps

3. Knowledge of security, embedded systems, or data science applications a plus

4. Demonstrated ability to teach Engineering courses a plus

5. Have recent successful experience in teaching or preparation to teach in a community college

9. The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote development of critical thinking skills and integrated learning (reading, writing, mathematics), and encourage them to become self-regulated and lifelong learners

10. The ability to use instructional methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter

11. The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds

12. The ability to develop student learning outcomes and to develop methods for assessing students achievement of those outcomes

13. Knowledge of current theories and teaching methods within STEM education, especially for a culturally diverse student population

14. The enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college

15. Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in computer science education, including online instruction

16. A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college

Preferred Qualifications:
Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes

Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students

Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus

Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive teaching in Computer Science

Demonstrated industry experience (preferred though not required)

Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach engineering courses (preferred though not required)

Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within Computer Science courses and classrooms

Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices
