The Position:
The College seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member for a Digital Services Librarian. The ideal candidate will share the College's commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide leadership and technical expertise for the implementation, maintenance, and delivery of digital and electronic resources (databases, ebooks, streaming media, etc.) to promote discoverability and accessibility to diverse populations at the College of San Mateo. The Librarian (Digital Services) also holds other essential duties including reference, information literacy instruction, and collection development. This position requires self-direction, flexibility, the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, and the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. This assignment may include evening and weekend hours.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.   1. Provide leadership and technical expertise for the implementation, maintenance, and delivery of digital and electronic resources (databases, ebooks, streaming media, etc.) to promote discoverability and accessibility to diverse populations at College of San Mateo
  2. Promote, improve, and maintain digital resource access by updating, customizing, and integrating interfaces for digital resource discovery, including the Librarys discovery interface (Primo VE), as well as vendor platforms for databases, ebooks, streaming media, and other digital resources
  3. Manage subscriptions and licenses for the Librarys digital and electronic resources
  4. Activate and manage new and existing digital and electronic resources in Alma
  5. Coordinate and work with Library, District, and consortia technical services, systems, and digital services teams to troubleshoot and ensure access to digital resources (including authentication protocols, proxy configuration, etc.)
  6. Work with CSM faculty to ensure student access to digital and electronic resources and to troubleshoot student access issues
  7. Work with vendors to ensure continuity of service of digital resources
  8. Develop and maintain the Library website as well as online content platforms such as LibGuides and other learning management systems
  9. Teach and assess information literacy in a variety of formats and modalities (e.g., credit-bearing courses, one-shot information literacy instruction sessions, and workshops)
  10. Provide reference services in-person and remotely using various communication tools
  11. Participate in department/division, College, District, and regional committees as appropriate
  12. Perform other duties as assigned and as required by contract and institutional needs


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters degree or above in library science, library and information science, OR the equivalent (see below)
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom

Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Masters Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelors or Associates Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The screening committee will select for interview candidates from among those applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, give evidence of any or all of the following:
Library Instruction & Reference
  1. Experience developing, teaching, or assessing information literacy instruction and other library instruction for face-to-face or online courses
  2. Skill in using various face-to-face and online teaching tools
  3. Strong oral and written communication skills, including engaging presentation skills
  4. Commitment to collaborative learning and working environments
  5. Experience working in learning management systems
  6. Experience creating and using online research guides
  7. Knowledge of or skill using strategies to ensure library accessibility (physical, digital, and educational)
  8. Training or experience delivering reference services in face-to-face and online modalities


Digital Services
  1. Knowledge of current and emerging trends and technologies related to digital and electronic resources and library services
  2. Knowledge of core concepts for acquiring, receiving, licensing, processing, troubleshooting, and maintaining digital and electronic resources
  3. Experience working with portfolios and electronic collections in Alma
  4. Experience working with discovery interfaces (Primo VE), proxies, vendor platforms
  5. Experience developing, maintaining, and updating websites
  6. Experience working with Springshare products (LibGuides, LibApps, LibCal, etc.)
  7. Knowledge of online teaching and learning tools and learning management systems, such as Canvas


Preferred Qualifications:
  • American Library Association (ALA) accredited Masters degree in library science or library information science
  • Experience with reference, instruction, and collection development for community college or baccalaureate degree programs
  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields impact participation and outcomes
  • Experience and skill in advancing equity and addressing equity gaps in the library and on campus
  • Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive teaching and librarianship
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and librarian practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students
  • Experience providing instruction related to metaliteracies including information, media, technology, and digital literacy
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution designations for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices
