The Position:
Reporting to San Mateo County Community Colleges Foundation's (the Foundation's) Executive Director, the Foundation Development Director is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and implementing contributed income programs, including major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, special events, and faculty and staff giving for the benefit of scholarships and special programs at the San Mateo County Community College District's (SMCCCD's) three colleges (Skyline College, Canada College, and College of San Mateo). Public contact is extensive and involves faculty, staff, businesses, SMCCCD Trustees, Foundation Board members, and donors with the goal of advancing the Foundation's mission and services. The Development Director will create compelling opportunities for donors to support the Foundation's mission and to make the experience of giving satisfying and rewarding. The successful candidate has the ability to work with a high degree of independence, sound judgment, teamwork, and initiative.

The Foundation seeks a Development Director who is poised to make a meaningful impact on the trajectory of the Foundation and student success at SMCCCD. The Development Director will play a meaningful role as the Foundation embarks on strategic planning with the likelihood of a comprehensive campaign to increase our average scholarship award amount for our students most in need of financial support to help them stay in college and accomplish their academic goals. The successful candidate will be an equity-minded individual ready to collaborate with SMCCCD staff, faculty, and administrators.


Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. 1. Plan, direct, and implement the Foundations fundraising campaigns and activities including the Annual Giving, Faculty and Staff Giving, Special Events, and Planned Giving Program

2. Expand the Foundations fundraising program; Generate new and increase current revenue by identifying and cultivating prospective donors and by developing and implementing strategies to increase current giving levels

3. Lead major gift efforts by developing and maintaining relationships with major donors ($10,000+); Steward regional major gifts and ensure donors are informed of the effects of their generosity

4. Manage an annual portfolio of 150-200 donors/prospects with annual goals for visitations and outcomes to secure unrestricted individual gifts, major gifts, estate gifts, corporate and foundation grants

5. Manage and grow the Chancellors Circle; Duties include maintaining current base of Chancellors Circle members, increasing current member giving levels, and identifying, cultivating, and soliciting additional members

6. Collaborate with the Board of Directors and Executive Director on the creation of a tactical fund development plan to support the strategic direction of the Foundation top funding initiatives, including General Operations, Promise Scholars Program, Endowment Scholarships and other programmatic support requested from the College District

7. Create and manage employee giving fundraising activities

8. Direct and lead adaptations to current fundraising strategies and practices in accordance with IRS nonprofit regulations

9. Prepare regular reports for presentation to staff, Board of Directors, and others, including regular communications to the Board of Directors regarding fundraising strategies and activities

10. Direct and implement gift and donor recognition programs, guiding the Donor Relations Manager stewardship plan

11. Recruit and train volunteer fundraising leadership, including Alumni Council and Corporate Council

12. Develop, train, mentor, and partner with the Foundations Alumni Relations Manager on alumni giving strategies including integrating alumni giving into the Annual Campaign for Student Success

13. Provide guidance and support to ongoing or new college-level grassroots fundraising activities with affinity groups such as Athletics, KCSM, Departmental funds, Student groups

14. Coordinate and collaborate with college faculty and staff and other appropriate individuals when a college program is identified that could benefit from private support; Work in partnership with SMCCCD college faculty and staff as necessary for the mutual benefit of the college and donors philanthropic goal

15. Serve as a contributing writer for all solicitation materials, Foundation publications, social media, and website

16. Actively support major gift campaigns conducted by the Colleges, District, and Foundation

17. Use of a database (Raisers Edge), and a variety of computer software applications to prepare reports, correspondence, and other materials

18. Research a variety of donor demographic, statistical, financial, and other data for reporting and planning purposes

19. Establish contacts and network with local businesses, foundations and corporations, creating a robust grant program

20. Perform other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:
A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree in a relevant field

Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

4+ years in a lead development role at a nonprofit organization

Demonstrated success and experience in development, including major gifts and campaigns (fundraising from multiple donor channels)

Experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers/board of directors

Advanced written and oral communication skills


Physical Requirements:
This classification requires attention to detail, flexibility, adaptability, manual dexterity, sitting for long periods, pushing and pulling, visual acuity, oral communication, and tact and sensitivity in order to perform the essential functions. Lifting, ability to type, use phone, intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping, occasional light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 35 pounds or less, ability to work at computer, including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices, ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct Foundation business. Some weekend and evening duties. Position requires sitting and viewing a computer monitor for various lengths of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, reaching, ability to exert 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others, vision to read printed material and computer monitor.

13. Ability to build strong and mutually beneficial relationships between the Foundation, donors, faculty, staff, and external audiences

14. Interact effectively with community volunteers

15. Plan, organize, and coordinate activities and operations related to fundraising campaigns, projects, and activities
