The Position:
The College seeks a full-time, tenure track faculty member in Assistive Technology. The ideal candidate will share the College's commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

The anticipated start date for this position is Fall 2022.



Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.   1. Develop and implement the curriculum in assistive computer technology as it relates to college-level students in a diverse educational environment and monitor effectiveness through Student Learning Outcomes
  2. Provide classroom and individual (or direct or one-to-one) instruction to students in the use of Assistive Technology software and strategies for its application to their college course(s). Software and applications include, but are not limited to Dragon Professional for Individual, Kurzweil 3000, Smartpen, JAWS, and Magic
  3. Develop accessible course materials for assistive computer technology classes
  4. Assess the technology needs of students and determine the appropriate assistive technology to support/meet their identified accommodations and their access to educational/course materials, including online materials
  5. Maintain accurate records for students receiving services and maintain proper documentation and confidentiality of student files using an online database
  6. Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Educational Access Center (EAC) programs student learning outcomes
  7. Train staff who provide classroom support in Assistive Technology classes and work with students in the Assistive Technology Lab
  8. In collaboration with the District Information Technology Department, coordinate the installation and maintenance of assistive computer technology in EAC s Assistive Technology Lab/Classroom and Test Proctoring Lab as well as computer labs or service areas across campus
  9. Keep current with advancements in assistive technology and its application to students with disabilities in the areas of access, reading/writing, learning, and alternate media
  10. Provide technical assistance to campus instructional and technology committees on access requirements for individuals with disabilities
  11. Collaborate with the Districts Accessibility Specialist about the accessibility of online content (i.e., website, forms, or course management system) for students with disabilities using Assistive Technology software
  12. Serve as a member of division and college committees
  13. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs in a timely manner
  14. Engage in outreach and promotion of EAC services and available technologies


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters degree or above or equivalent foreign degree in the category of disability, special education, education, psychology, educational psychology, or rehabilitation technology AND 15-semester units of upper-division or graduate study in the area of disability OR the equivalent (see below)
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom

Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Masters Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelors or Associates Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The screening committee will select for interview candidates from among those applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, give evidence of any or all of the following:
  1. An understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff
  2. Knowledge of effective uses of a variety of assistive computer technologies such as screen readers and magnifiers, speech recognition, note-taking tools, and text-to-speech software applications for students with disabilities
  3. Successful experience in teaching or preparation to teach college-level courses and knowledge of successful teaching techniques for adult students with disabilities
  4. Familiarity with Windows and Macintosh operating systems and computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite)
  5. Familiarity with state and national laws, standards, and guidelines that apply to the California Community Colleges with regard to equal access to technology and the provision of academic materials in alternate formats for students with disabilities


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students
  • Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus
  • Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive teaching in assistive technology
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within assistive technology courses and classrooms
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices
